Adaptive reuse – part two

City of Bergen, Norway

Our client approached us with a project for a newly acquired building adjacent to a former project we had done in the same street. The building had suffered from years of neglect, with inadequate maintenance and alteration work executed by low standards and poor craftsmanship. At the same time, the exterior had been “updated” in the 1970´s adding canopies, doors, and windows. With this as the outspring for the project it was decided to strip the building down to its bare structure, rebuilding it with high qualities internal as well to the exterior.

Situated in one of the historic and preserved quarters of Bergen, there was a demand for reconstructing the facades to its origin, and to be seen in relation to adjacent buildings and the street as a hole. This resulted in a meticulous process reproducing windows, doors and facade elements based on old blueprints and photographs. The layout of the building has been reorganized with a restaurant on ground level with access form the font, and a new access from the backside serving an office floor and apartments as a part of reactivating the backstreet of the quarter.

This resulted in a meticulous process reproducing windows, doors and facade elements based on old blueprints and photographs.
